Help Bring the Arts to Life in the Greenbrier Valley
When you make a gift to Carnegie Hall, Inc. you help us Bring the Arts to Life!! in Greenbrier Valley. We provide arts education, scholarships, musical performances, kids camps, adult classes, and free outdoor summer concerts. Over 4,000 students participate annually in Creative Classrooms, taught by local artists in our public schools; Approximately 700 5th graders play recorders in an interactive orchestra concert coordinated with Carnegie Hall in New York; Over 4,000 visitors enjoy art exhibits in three galleries and attend performances in the Hamilton Auditorium; Six free outdoor concerts are presented to the community with the Ivy Terrace Summer Concert Series; Over 200 students attend Carnegie Kids’ College during July, many on scholarships; Our Performance Series provides diverse entertainment for the entire family from September to June. Ivy Terrace Renovation Project
Rebuilding a Community Treasure
In March of 2025 a critical sewage failure disrupted operations at Carnegie Hall, leaving the historic landmark without water for eleven days. Emergency pipe replacement was required to prevent further damage to the building’s infrastructure and allow safe use by staff, patrons, and artists. The excavation ran beneath the Ivy Terrace. ENHANCED ACCESS Significantly improved ADA access from Church Street and around the entire terrace. Grade‑level ADA entry to the kitchen, eliminating previous elevation barriers. Expanded and updated first‑floor restrooms with ADA‑compliant access. Rerouted ADA‑compliant ramps and walkways for safer, more intuitive navigation. Reduced elevation of the terrace and lawn, creating smoother transitions between spaces. Improvements include: CAPACITY Terrace size tripled by lowering the elevation and regrading the surrounding lawn. Expanded restroom facilities to better serve large audiences and event traffic. Increased space for tents, allowing for larger or more complex event setups. Enhanced structural support to accommodate heavier foot traffic, equipment, and performance needs. Restored and strengthened outdoor gathering space, ensuring it can reliably host the Ivy Terrace Concert Series and other major community events. FUNCTIONALITY New direct kitchen entrance, especially beneficial for caterers, renters, and teaching artists. Added prep space adjacent to the renovated kitchen to support culinary classes, catering, and Appalachian Heritage programming. Rebuilt terrace surface for durability, safety, and long‑term use. Installation of new stone and brick retaining walls to stabilize the site and improve longevity. Improved layout for teaching artists and workshop participants, enhancing programs like salt‑rising bread, herbal foraging, sausage‑making, and Kids in the Kitchen. Aesthetic upgrades that make the new Ivy Terrace a visually stunning backdrop for community life.
Name a Chair
The best seat in the house
Carnegie Hall is offering a great opportunity for fans and friends of the Hall to leave their mark at this historic landmark by naming a chair in the Hamilton Auditorium. For a donation of $300 you can have your name or that of someone you want to honor or remember placed on a nameplate on the back of one of the new chairs that Carnegie Hall installed as part of the second phase of its auditorium renovation project. In 1958 the Greenbrier College for Women purchased used seats from a theater in Chicago to replace the wooden benches originally installed in what is now the Hamilton Auditorium. Research indicates that the chairs were manufactured between 1926 and 1932. Those seats have served us well for the past six decades, but the time had come to replace the seats with ones that are safer and more comfortable. The new seats are dark green with Baroque end caps reminiscent of the existing seats. The seat bottom comes up automatically when the patron rises, making it easier to exit the rows. Thanks to grants from the West Virginia Department of Arts, Culture and History and the James F.B. Peyton Fund, Carnegie Hall was able to replace the seats in the balcony this past spring along with installing new flooring, repainting the auditorium, and making other improvements. Naming a chair in honor of a loved one is a unique and personal gift that he or she could enjoy for years. The nameplate will be in place for the life of the seats at the Hall. Please indicate the seat or seats you would like to name, if you have a preference, and include the name or names you would like placed on each nameplate. Performance Fund
Help support performances
The Eugene and Annie Jeffus Performance Fund was established in 2020 through The Greater Greenbrier Valley Community Foundation in recognition of the Jeffus’ exemplary patronage of Carnegie Hall. To kick start the Fund, Jeff and Annie were named as the inaugural Honorees of the 2021 Gala and gifts designated in their name propelled the Fund to $10,000. It is our pleasure to introduce local philanthropists Kyle and Ann Fort as the Fifth Annual Gala Honorees. Donations made in their name will be added to the endowment with the purpose of expanding the Performance Fund to become a significant source of programming support for Carnegie Hall in the years to come.

Carnegie Hall Foundation
Maintaining and preserving the building
With financial support from Andrew Carnegie and funds raised by the Greenbrier Valley community, Carnegie Hall was built in 1902 to serve as an auditorium and classroom building for Greenbrier College for Women. From its opening, the college brought to Carnegie Hall performing artists for the enjoyment of the students and community. After the college closed and the State of West Virginia acquired the college property, the prospect of Carnegie Hall being razed was looming. Alarmed, leaders of the community stepped forward in 1983 to buy the building and established Carnegie Hall, Inc., as a not-for-profit organization and dreamed of the regional arts and educational center it is today. To ensure the future of Carnegie Hall for generations to come, Carnegie Hall Foundation, Inc., was established in 2005 to maintain and preserve the building that has served our region for over 100 years. To accomplish this objective, it is the goal of the Foundation to raise $10 million for a permanent endowment. In the spirit of cooperation that began with Andrew Carnegie, please join The Carnegie Hall Foundation in our effort to secure the future of Carnegie Hall through your tax-deductible contribution.
Friends of Carnegie Hall
Providing volunteer and financial assistance
The mission of Friends is to promote interest in Carnegie Hall and to provide financial and volunteer support. Meetings are held at 5 PM on the second Tuesdays of the following months: September, October, November, December, February, March, April, May, June. Yearly membership dues are $20 for active members and $40 for patrons. Friend’s annual contributions include: Purchasing recorders for students in Greenbrier and neighboring counties for the yearly Link-Up music education program. It also provides financial assistance in bringing a symphony orchestra to Carnegie Hall to execute the program. Assisting with the Creative Youth Art Exhibit each March at Carnegie Hall Preparing meals for Main Stage performers Serving Christmas dinner for Carnegie Hall staff members and their families Providing volunteers to assist with Kids’ College, T.O.O.T., performances and behind the scenes and with the public Sponsoring 1 – 2 fundraising events each year in order to provide for the purchase of special items needed for the Hall. Friends, since its formation in 2007, has raised over $80,000 to purchase the following items and more: The historical marker in front of the Hall Elegant and versatile Board Room tables and 18 chairs A new floor for the Board Room Large planters for the Ivy Terrace Hearing-assistance devices and a new light board for the auditorium Efficient window blinds for the Hall Kitchen equipment Acoustic ceiling tiles for the Old Stone and Board Rooms Ceiling light fixtures for the Old Stone and Board Rooms The replacement of hammers for the Hall’s Steinway grand piano For more information, please contact Liz Wickline, Friends of Carnegie Hall President, at lizwsells@gmail.com
